Instagram shows photos at up to 1080 pixels wide. The height depends on the shape you choose, from a wide landscape to a tall portrait. These are the sizes that keep your photo sharp and uncropped:
| Format | Aspect ratio | Size in pixels |
|---|---|---|
| Tall portrait | 3:4 | 1080 × 1440 |
| Portrait | 4:5 | 1080 × 1350 |
| Square | 1:1 | 1080 × 1080 |
| Landscape | 1.91:1 | 1080 × 566 |
Which size should I use?
Portrait takes up the most space in the feed, so it's the usual choice. Instagram's help center says the app keeps photos at full resolution for any shape between 1.91:1 and 3:4, which makes 1080 × 1440 the tallest photo you can post from the app.
The 3:4 profile grid
Since early 2025 your profile grid shows every post as a 3:4 rectangle instead of a square. A 3:4 post fills its tile exactly. A 4:5 post loses a little at the sides, a square post loses more, and a landscape post shows only its middle. Keep faces and text near the center so the grid thumbnail still makes sense.
What happens to other sizes
- Wider than 1080 pixels: Instagram scales the photo down to 1080 pixels wide.
- Narrower than 320 pixels: Instagram enlarges it to 320 pixels wide, and it will look soft.
- Taller than 3:4 or wider than 1.91:1: Instagram crops it to the nearest supported shape.
Carousels
A carousel holds up to 20 photos and videos in one post. The shape you choose (square, portrait or landscape) applies to every slide, so export all of them at the same size. Seamless panoramas that run across slides need each slide cut at exactly that size.
Upload tips
- Export at exactly 1080 pixels wide, so Instagram doesn't resize it again.
- Save as JPEG in the sRGB color space; other color spaces can look washed out.
- Turn on Upload at highest quality: Profile → Menu → Media quality.
Videos in the feed
Videos you post to the feed are shared as reels. For their sizes see Instagram reel size, and for length limits see how long Instagram reels can be.
