Two ways to measure engagement
Published averages disagree mostly because they divide by different things. These are the two standard methods.
By followers
(likes + comments + saves + shares) ÷ followers × 100
Best for comparing accounts, since anyone can see follower counts. Most industry benchmarks use it.
By reach
(likes + comments + saves + shares) ÷ accounts reached × 100
Best for judging your own posts: it only counts people who saw them, so a post that reached few people isn't punished for it.
- One post: enter its numbers with 1 as the number of posts.
- An average: add up the interactions of your last 10 posts, for example, and enter 10.
- Reels and carousels count the same way. Leave saves and shares empty if you don't have insights.
What counts as a good rate?
There's no official number. Reports that divide by followers usually put brand accounts well under 1% per post, and those that divide by reach land several times higher, so a figure only means something next to one measured the same way.
Two patterns hold across most studies: smaller accounts tend to have higher rates than very large ones, and rates differ a lot by industry. The fairest comparison is with your own posts over time: work out the average of your last 10, then see which posts beat it.

Engagement rate questions
How do you calculate Instagram engagement rate?
Add up a post's likes, comments, saves and shares, divide by your follower count and multiply by 100. For an average, add up several posts' interactions, divide by the number of posts, then by followers. Engagement rate by reach divides the same interactions by the number of accounts that saw the posts instead.
Should I use followers or reach?
Use followers to compare your account with others, because follower counts are public and most published benchmarks use them. Use reach to judge your own posts, because it only counts people who actually saw the post. Rates by reach are always higher, since most followers don't see any given post.
What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?
It depends on how it's measured, so compare like with like. Industry reports that divide by followers, such as Rival IQ's annual benchmark report, usually find brand accounts averaging well under 1%. Reports that divide by reach find several times that. Smaller accounts tend to have higher rates than very large ones. The most useful comparison is with your own past posts.
Where do I find saves, shares and reach?
In Instagram, open the post and tap View insights; you need a professional (business or creator) account. Likes and comments are visible on the post itself. See our guide to the Instagram professional dashboard for where everything is.
Do you store what I type?
No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing is sent to MuChat. You don't need an account or to connect Instagram.
How can I raise my engagement rate?
Give people a reason to comment, such as a question or a keyword to get something by DM, reply to the comments you get, and post when your followers are online, which your insights show. Comment-to-DM automation helps with the first two: everyone who comments your keyword gets a reply.

Turn comments into conversations
MuChat replies to every comment with your keyword by DM, so more people comment and every one of them hears back. Free plan, no card needed.
