Trial reels on Instagram: how they work

Trial reels go to people who don't follow you first, so you can test an idea before your followers see it. Who can use them, how to post one, and when to share it to everyone.

A trial reel is shown to accounts that don't follow you instead of to your followers. It lets you test a new idea and see how it performs before deciding whether your followers should see it too.

Who can use trial reels

Trial reels eligibility
Account typeFollowers needed
Professional (business or creator), publicAt least 200
Personal, publicAt least 1,000

Your account also has to be eligible to appear in recommendations. You can check that under Account Status in your settings.

How to post a trial reel

  1. 01Create a new reel as usual. A reel you've already posted may get limited reach as a trial.
  2. 02Before sharing, tap Trial.
  3. 03Tap Next, then Share.

Your followers won't see it in their feed or Reels tab, and it won't appear on your profile. Some followers may still come across it, for example if someone sends it to them, on a page of reels using the same audio, or in search engine results.

Share it to everyone

Insights appear within 24 hours. If the reel is doing well, open it from the reels tab on your profile, tap View insights, then Share to everyone. It then appears on your profile grid and can reach your followers.

To have Instagram decide for you, open Trial settings while posting and turn on Share to everyone automatically. The reel is shared with everyone if it performs well soon after you post it, and the setting stays on for future trial reels until you turn it off.
