How to pick a good username

  • Keep it short

Short names are easier to remember, type and say out loud. Aim for under 15 characters if you can.

  • Make it easy to spell

If you have to explain where the underscores go, people will tag the wrong account.

  • Match your other accounts

Use the same handle on TikTok, Threads and your website so people find you everywhere.

  • Go easy on numbers

Random numbers make an account look like spam. A year or a number that means something is fine.

  • Say what you do

A word like your city, craft or niche helps people recognize you, and helps when your exact name is taken.

  • Stay clear of other brands

Instagram can remove a username that uses someone else's trademark.

FAQ

Username questions

What are the rules for an Instagram username?

Up to 30 characters, using only letters, numbers, periods and underscores. No spaces or other symbols, no two periods in a row, and no period at the start or end. Capital letters don't matter: Instagram treats usernames as lowercase.

Can this tool tell me if a username is taken?

No. Instagram doesn't let other apps check whether a username is free, so each idea links to its Instagram profile page for you to look. The final check is to type the name under Edit profile → Username in the app.

How do I change my Instagram username?

Go to your profile, tap Edit profile, then Username, and type the new one. If it's free, it changes straight away. Accounts that reach a lot of people may have the change reviewed first, and followers may be notified.

Is my username the same as my name on Instagram?

No. Your username is the @handle in your profile link and must follow the rules above. Your name is the bold text on your profile and can use spaces, capital letters and other alphabets. Put the words people would search for in your name.

Can I use letters from my own alphabet?

Not in the username: it only takes Latin letters a–z. This tool turns Cyrillic and accented letters into their usual Latin spelling. Your name on your profile can be written in any alphabet.

Do you store what I type?

No. Ideas are made in your browser and nothing is sent to MuChat. No account or login is needed.
