Instagram chatbots: what they do, and how to set one up
A chatbot answers your Instagram comments, story replies and DMs for you, day and night. Here's what one can do for a business, the rules Instagram enforces, and how to start free.
Six ways people start a conversation
An Instagram chatbot waits for someone to reach out, then answers with the messages and buttons you've set up. These are the moments it can respond to.
Comments
Someone comments a keyword on a post, reel or ad. The bot replies publicly under the comment and sends a DM with your link.
Story replies and mentions
Someone replies to your story or tags you in theirs. The bot thanks them, shares the offer, or asks a question.
DM keywords
Someone sends “PRICE” or “MENU”. The bot answers with the right message and buttons.
Live comments
Viewers comment during an Instagram Live. The bot DMs them the link while you keep talking.
Any other DM
A default reply for messages nothing else matches, so nobody waits hours for a first answer.
Links and QR codes
A link or QR code opens a DM with your bot, for bios, ads, packaging or a shop counter.
What Instagram allows
Instagram limits when a business can message someone. Every legitimate chatbot follows the same rules, because the API enforces them.
| The rule | What it means | |
|---|---|---|
| Who starts | The person, by commenting, replying to a story or sending a DM | Businesses can't send cold DMs |
| After a DM | 24 hours to reply as much as you like | Each new message from them restarts the clock |
| After a comment | One private reply, within 7 days | A button in that reply opens the full conversation |
| How the bot connects | Instagram's official API, approved on Instagram's own login screen | Tools that log in with your password break Instagram's terms |

Which kind of bot you need
Rule-based bots answer with messages you wrote, triggered by keywords and buttons. AI bots write their own answers. Most businesses start with rules and add AI later.
Rule-based
- You know exactly what every message says.
- Best for comment-to-DM, link delivery, lead capture and FAQs.
- Quick to set up from a template, and free to start.
AI
- Handles open-ended questions you didn't plan for.
- Can answer wrongly, so it needs your FAQs and close review.
- Usually on paid plans, or limited by credits.
MuChat is rule-based today. Its AI replies are built but not switched on yet, and this page will say so until they are.
Set one up in about ten minutes
The steps in MuChat; other tools work much the same way.
- 01Switch Instagram to a professional account (Business or Creator) if it isn't one already.
- 02Sign up for MuChat and connect Instagram on Instagram's own login screen. MuChat never sees your password.
- 03Pick a template, such as comment-to-DM, and choose the post and the keyword people should comment.
- 04Write the public reply and the opening DM with a button, then the message with your link.
- 05Go live, then comment the keyword from another account to see it work.

Instagram chatbot questions
Are Instagram chatbots allowed?
Yes, if they use Instagram's official messaging API. Meta lets businesses automate replies to people who comment on their posts, reply to their stories or message them. What breaks Instagram's terms is software that logs in with your password to mass-follow, mass-like or DM strangers; that's what gets accounts restricted.
Can an Instagram chatbot message people first?
No. A business can only reply to someone who contacted it first: a comment, a story reply, a story mention or a DM. A comment allows one private reply within seven days; a DM opens a 24-hour window that resets each time the person writes again.
Do I need a business account for an Instagram chatbot?
You need an Instagram professional account, Business or Creator. Switching is free in Instagram's settings, and a personal account can't connect to the messaging API.
What's the best free Instagram chatbot?
It depends on what you need from the free plan. Manychat Free covers 25 active contacts a month. LinkDM Free sends 1,000 DMs a month but keeps public comment replies and flows for Pro. Inrō Free covers 100 contacts with 3 automations and some AI credits. MuChat Free covers 100 contacts with 4 live automations, every trigger and the Flow Builder.
Is an AI chatbot better than a rule-based one?
For most businesses on Instagram, rule-based is the right start. Comment-to-DM, link delivery, lead capture and FAQs work on keywords and buttons, and you know exactly what every message says. AI helps with open-ended questions, but it can answer wrongly, so it's worth adding once the basics run.
Is MuChat an AI chatbot?
Not today. MuChat answers with the messages, buttons and flows you set up. AI replies are built but not switched on yet, so if AI answers matter to you now, look at a tool that has them live.
Will a chatbot get my Instagram account banned?
Not when it uses the official API and only replies to people who reached out. Keep keywords specific, don't send the same link to everyone on every post, and give people a reason to tap. Accounts get restricted for logging in through unofficial bots and for spam, not for answering their own comments.
