Your formatted message shows here, the way WhatsApp displays it.

Lists, quotes and inline code are newer: people on an old version of WhatsApp see the symbols instead.

Fancy letters

Unicode letters that look bold or curly anywhere, including your WhatsApp name, status and Instagram bio, where the * and _ markers don't work. Screen readers may spell them out letter by letter, and search can't match them, so keep them for a word or two.

Only the letters a–z and digits change; accented letters and other alphabets stay as typed. Fancy letters use your message's first line.

Cheat sheet

Every WhatsApp formatting code

Type the symbols around your text, or at the start of a line for lists and quotes. They work in WhatsApp on phones, the web and the desktop apps.

FAQ

WhatsApp formatting questions

How do I write in bold on WhatsApp?

Put an asterisk on both sides of the text: *hello* shows as bold. The asterisks have to touch the word, with no space inside them. On your phone you can also select a word and pick Bold from the menu that appears.

Can I underline text on WhatsApp?

No. WhatsApp has bold, italic, strikethrough, monospace, inline code, lists and quotes, but no underline.

Why isn't my formatting showing?

The markers only work at the edges of words. *hello* works, but * hello * (spaces inside) and word*hello* (stuck to another word) don't. Lists, quotes and inline code are newer, so people on an old version of WhatsApp see the symbols instead.

Can I change the font on WhatsApp?

Not the app's font for the people you write to. In a message you can use monospace, a typewriter-style font, with three backticks: ```text```. Fancy letters from this page look styled anywhere, including your WhatsApp name and About, where the markers don't work.

Does formatting work in WhatsApp Business and groups?

Yes. The same markers work in chats and groups on WhatsApp and the WhatsApp Business app.

Do you store what I type?

No. Formatting happens in your browser and nothing is sent to MuChat. No account or login is needed.
