Replying to comments is the cheapest growth habit on Instagram. A reply turns a passing reaction into a conversation, shows everyone else scrolling that a real person runs the account, and often surfaces the questions that turn into sales. Here's how to reply, what to say, and how to keep up when a post takes off.
How to reply to a comment
- 01Open the post and tap the comments icon.
- 02Tap Reply under the comment. Instagram starts your reply with their @username, so they get a notification.
- 03Write your reply and post it. To answer several people at once, mention each of them.
You can also like a comment by tapping the heart next to it, pin your favourite comments to the top of the post, and hide, delete or restrict comments you don't want there. Instagram's own help center has the current steps for each.
What to say: replies by type of comment
- Compliments: thank them and add something real. “Thank you! This one took three tries to get right 😅” beats a plain “thanks!”.
- Questions: answer in the comment if the answer helps everyone (“Yes, it ships to Canada”). If it's personal, say you'll send a DM, then do it.
- Price questions: give the price publicly if you can. If you can't, reply “Sent you a DM 💌” and send it straight away; people asking the price are often ready to buy.
- Complaints: reply calmly and in public, so others see you care, then move the details to DMs: “So sorry about this. Sending you a message now so we can sort it out.”
- Tags of friends: thank both of them, or reply with something the friend will enjoy too.
- Spam and trolls: don't argue. Hide, delete or restrict the comment and move on.
How to reply to a comment in DMs
Some answers belong in private: prices, order details, a discount code, a link. A business account can send a private reply to a comment, but Instagram allows only one such message per comment, and only within seven days. The conversation fully opens when the person replies or taps a button in it. That's why a good private reply is short, friendly and ends with one clear button.
When there are too many to answer by hand
A post that takes off can bring hundreds of comments in an hour, and a reply that lands tomorrow is a missed chance. That's where comment automation helps. With MuChat you pick a post (or all of them), add a keyword, or none to answer every comment, and write two things:
- A few public replies, such as “Sent you a DM 💌” and “Check your DMs 👀”. MuChat picks one at random each time, so the thread doesn't look copy-pasted.
- The private reply: a one-line message with a button. When they tap, MuChat sends the link, code or answer they asked for.
Keep answering the interesting comments yourself. Automation handles the repeated question; you handle the conversation. Every reply MuChat sends shows up in the shared inbox, so your team can step in at any point.
A simple routine
- 01Check comments soon after posting, while the post is fresh.
- 02Answer questions first, then compliments, then everything else.
- 03Move anything personal to DMs, and actually send the DM.
- 04Hide spam early so it doesn't set the tone.
- 05Put the questions you answer most into an automation, and the answers you type most into quick replies.
